5 Signs Your Home Needs a New Water Line

The water service line — the pipe running from the street meter to your home — takes a lot of abuse over decades: soil movement, corrosion, and root pressure from nearby trees. Here's what tells us it's time to replace it rather than patch it again.

1. Low Pressure Across the Entire House

If every fixture in the house has weak pressure — not just one — the restriction is likely in the main service line itself, often from corrosion narrowing the inside of the pipe.

2. Discolored Water Right When You Turn On a Tap

A brief burst of rust-tinted water at the start of use, especially after the water's sat for a while, points to a corroding line rather than a fixture issue.

3. A Section of Yard That's Always Damp

An area near where the service line runs that's persistently soggy — even without rain or irrigation — usually means an underground leak in that line.

4. You've Already Had One Service Line Leak

Much like supply pipe inside the home, a line that's failed once due to age or corrosion is likely to fail again nearby — repeated line leaks are the clearest signal it's time to replace rather than keep patching.

5. Your Home Is On Original Galvanized Service Line

Older Torrance neighborhoods sometimes still have original galvanized service lines from early development, which have a known, finite lifespan and are the most common water line replacement candidates.
