Call immediately

Active flooding, a burst pipe, no water shutting off at the main, a gas smell near an appliance, or raw sewage backing up into the home are all situations where waiting makes things measurably worse by the hour. These call for shutting off the water or gas at the source and getting a plumber out right away.

Same-day, but not a 2am emergency

A water heater that's stopped working, a toilet that won't stop running, or a drain that's slow but still draining are inconvenient but rarely urgent overnight — these are fine to schedule for the next available same-day slot rather than paying emergency rates in the middle of the night.

Can wait for a normal appointment

A dripping faucet, a slightly slow drain that's been that way for a while, or a running toilet that isn't actively overflowing won't get dramatically worse in a day or two. These are worth fixing, just not worth an emergency premium.
