Hard water carries a higher mineral content — mostly calcium and magnesium — than soft water. It's safe to drink and doesn't affect health, but over years of daily use it leaves mineral deposits inside pipes, water heaters, and fixtures. Much of the South Bay, including Torrance, sits on a water supply that runs on the harder end of the scale, so local homes tend to see these effects sooner than homes in areas with naturally softer water.
The earliest signs are usually cosmetic: white or chalky buildup around faucet aerators and showerheads, spots on dishes and glassware even after washing, and soap that doesn't lather as easily. A whole-house water softener is the most complete fix, treating water before it reaches any fixture or appliance. Where a full softener isn't in the budget, routine descaling of showerheads and faucet aerators (a vinegar soak works for most fixtures) and periodic water heater flushing can meaningfully slow the buildup.
Hard water damage happens slowly, which makes it easy to overlook until a water heater fails early or pressure drops noticeably.
